桃園國際機場第一航廈完成於1979年，由華裔結構專家林同棪（T. Y. Lin），採用當時最先進的預力結構系統設計而成。2004年，日本建築師團紀栫（Norihiko Dan）經由觀光局舉辦的「門戶系列國際競圖」，取得本案的設計權，配合的在地建築師是許宗熙建築師，團紀栫的結構工程師是有名的渡邊邦夫先生，本地配合的結構技師是張盈智結構技師，第一航廈的增建工程於2013年七月底完工，歷時九年。林同棪的桃園機場航廈的短向剖面上可以看見清楚的中心線（Center Line），建築形式以此中心線左右對稱，結構完整對稱，功能上也採用對稱形式，一側為抵達（Arrival），一側為離開（Departure）。
