ARE®: Architect Registration Examination

This article examines the historical significance and structure of the U.S. Architect Registration Examination (ARE) 4.0. It provides a detailed account of the seven major divisions, the nature of the graphic‑based questions, and their scoring proportions, supplemented by two sample problems that illustrate the exam’s underlying logic. The analysis aims to establish a foundation for understanding the reforms introduced in the current ARE 5.0; the following article will further compare the differences between the two versions and trace their evolution.

ARE® 4.0版本施行於2008年至2018年間，雖已由現行5.0版本取代，但對於理解ARE®考試制度的演變而言，4.0版本仍具有不可忽視的歷史意義。現今眾多中生代美國建築師，正是透過此版本完成專業資格認定，因此它不僅是一份考試，也是一個世代建築師養成過程的共同記憶。

在探討ARE®對建築師專業養成之意義時，4.0版本的內容也是重要的參考基礎。透過深入理解4.0版本的架構與考試邏輯，再與現行5.0版本加以對照比較，並理解NCARB演變考試版本的原因，我們得以更深入了解考試制度的意義，以及變革背後的必要性與意涵。

今年4月份616期的《建築師》雜誌已就ARE® 5.0內容與架構進行了完整介紹。本篇聚焦4.0版本，且討論兩個版本的差異，梳理考試制度的轉變脈絡。

由於ARE® 4.0內容相當廣泛，完整說明對於引發大眾與專業界的討論有其必要。礙於版面限制，本文將分兩期刊載：上篇著重考試七大科目的架構與要點，下篇則為4.0與5.0版本的演變與比較、4.0的評定標準、應考資格、通過率以及免試規定。
