位於柏林的「日安憂鬱」社會住宅是Alvaro Siza第一件位於國外的建築作品，也是他早期的都市集合住宅系列之一。1980年，柏林國際建築展IBA (International Building Exhibition Berlin; Internationale Bauausstellung Berlin)邀請Siza參與一個數階段的比圖，當時，Siza受邀的原因不外乎是IBA主席之一注意到他先前為共產黨執政的葡萄牙設計的社會住宅，成果不錯。

不過，「日安憂鬱」的環境背景既不同於葡萄牙一案的郊區大社區型態，是位於市中心老舊街廓的填充建築，對於一位外國建築師而言，還有社會、歷史、語言與地域的疏離所造成的資訊屏障。那麼，當時的Siza是如何處理柏林的空間歷史與社會脈絡呢？
小心翼翼的都市更新

1980年，IBA以「市中心為住宅區」為主題，邀請各方建築師參與比圖，設計以集合住宅為主的系列建物。IBA的目的是重新開發柏林，處理冷戰末期諸多都市與社會的問題，例如在地人口萎縮、移工社區住宅不足、違章居住、空間老化與空洞化等。
