Oriental, Garden, and Modernity Bawa and Chen Chi-Kwan’s Architecture

2017年4月與徐明松老師、學弟妹同行，以自助旅行的方式初次踏上斯里蘭卡，主要參觀斯里蘭卡建築師傑佛瑞∙巴瓦(Geoffrey Bawa, 1919-2003)的作品，旅行大多時間也都住巴瓦設計的旅館，除令人驚艷且全然放鬆的巴瓦空間、斯里蘭卡人的友善等之外，這趟旅程有個意外的收穫－隱約感覺巴瓦與陳其寬(1921-2007)的作品有異曲同工之妙。回國後再次走訪陳其寬設計的東海大學女白宮(1962)，站在建築西側，自南往北望，感受到女白宮與環境一氣呵成、融洽、自在的氣息，突然意識到，這不也是巴瓦作品的特色嗎？只是前者更傾向華人哲學的氛圍，輕柔、氣韻生動；後者則充滿南亞地域的野性，大而化之的粗獷。有意思的是，他們幾乎生在同一年代，一位南亞建築師，一位華人建築師，不同的養成背景，素昧平生，為何作品會有類似的情調？
