Light Wood Framing System

The evolution of frame wall wood construction began in the 19th century, as the American continent shifted from manual to machine-made timber, prioritizing economic efficiency and construction effectiveness. Over more than a century of practice, a new tradition of light wood framing system emerged.

相對於以柱樑作為結構系統的大木構架構造(Heavy Timber Construction)，框組式木構造或稱2×4s輕木構架構造(Light-frame Timber Construction)，則以規格化小尺寸角材結合規格化板材，組成牆體、樓板以及屋頂，屬於組合式板式結構。 歷史資料顯示(註1)，北美地區輕木構架構造的發展，與美國西部拓荒時代（英殖民時期～1912）有關。從17世紀以降，因應移民的增加住屋的需求急切，加上技術人員不足；在新大陸原以傳統榫接為主的建造系統顯得緩不濟急；在1830年代，機器製造的鐵釘以及機切木材日漸普及的背景下，1832年木匠George W. Snow在美國芝加哥近郊，以2″×4″工廠生產的規格材(Dimensional Lumber)為基本材設計了一座倉庫。
